Hire a Freelance Logo Designer
A logo has to work at 16 pixels and on a building, in one colour and in full colour, for years. The difference between a cheap logo and a good one is rarely the drawing — it is whether the designer thought about all the places it has to live.
What a freelance Logo Designer actually does
These are the engagements that come up most often. If your project does not resemble any of them, say so explicitly in your brief — it usually means you need an adjacent skill instead.
- Develop concepts from a brand brief rather than from a stock idea
- Deliver full vector files in every format you will actually need
- Produce responsive logo variants: full mark, compact, icon, single colour
- Define minimum sizes, clear space, and misuse rules
- Extend the mark into favicon, avatar, and social profile formats
What it costs in 2026
Hourly ranges seen across global freelance marketplaces. Use them to sanity-check a quote rather than as a target — a well-specified project frequently costs less at a higher hourly rate than a vague one does at a lower rate.
Entry level
$15/hr
Building experience. Good value on well-defined, low-risk work with review.
Mid level
$45/hr
Can own a feature end to end and will tell you when your plan is wrong.
Specialist
$120/hr
Deep experience, architecture decisions, and work where mistakes are expensive.
Fixed-price quotes are usually the better structure for work you can describe precisely. Hourly is safer when the scope will genuinely change as you learn — but agree a cap in writing either way.
Tools and technologies to expect
You do not need to understand these. You do need to see them appear naturally in a candidate's answers rather than only in their profile keywords.
Before you hire: a short checklist
Most bad freelance outcomes are decided before any work starts. These four checks catch the majority of them.
- 1 Agree in writing that you receive full copyright and the source vector files.
- 2 Ask to see logos in real use — signage, packaging, app icons — not only on a grey card.
- 3 Check they test at small sizes; that is where weak marks fall apart.
- 4 Confirm the number of revisions before starting, since this is the usual dispute.
Questions worth asking in the interview
You are not testing whether you can follow the answer. You are testing whether the answer is specific, whether it comes from experience, and whether they are comfortable saying "it depends" and explaining on what.
“How will this work as a 32-pixel favicon?”
“What do I receive, in which formats, and who owns the copyright?”
“How many concepts and revisions are included?”
“Have you checked this does not closely resemble an existing mark?”
Warning signs
None of these are automatically disqualifying, but each one deserves a direct question before you commit money.
- Only delivers PNG or JPG files
- Vague or absent copyright terms
- Portfolio contains recognisable stock or template marks

Frequently asked questions
How much should a logo cost?
Template-based work starts around $30–100 and is exactly what it sounds like. Original design with proper file delivery is $300–1,500, and a full identity system with guidelines runs $2,000–10,000.
What files do I need?
At minimum: layered vector source (AI or Figma), SVG, EPS, transparent PNGs at several sizes, and single-colour versions. If you only receive a PNG, you did not get a logo — you got a picture of one.
Who owns the logo?
Only you, if the contract says so explicitly. Put full copyright assignment on delivery in writing before work begins; verbal assurances have caused a great deal of expensive trouble.
