Fixed-price quotes are usually the better structure for work you can describe precisely. Hourly is safer when the scope will genuinely change as you learn — but agree a cap in writing either way.

Before you hire: a short checklist
Most bad freelance outcomes are decided before any work starts. These four checks catch the majority of them.
- 1 Ask for a case study that explains reasoning, not a gallery of pretty screens.
- 2 Check they design states — empty, loading, error — not only the happy path.
- 3 Open a Figma file and see whether a developer could actually build from it.
- 4 Confirm they consider accessibility and contrast as part of the work.
Questions worth asking in the interview
You are not testing whether you can follow the answer. You are testing whether the answer is specific, whether it comes from experience, and whether they are comfortable saying "it depends" and explaining on what.
“Walk me through a design decision you changed after user feedback.”
“How do you hand off to developers so nothing gets guessed?”
“How do you design for the empty state of this screen?”
“What would you cut from this scope to ship sooner?”
Warning signs
None of these are automatically disqualifying, but each one deserves a direct question before you commit money.

Do I need UX before development?
For anything with a multi-step flow, yes. Design changes cost hours; the same change after build costs days and often breaks something. This is the cheapest point at which to be wrong.
