Hire a Freelance AWS Engineer
AWS specialists are hired to design an architecture that will not surprise you, or to fix one that already has — usually in the form of a bill or an outage. The skill is choosing the smallest set of services that meets the requirement.
What a freelance AWS Engineer actually does
These are the engagements that come up most often. If your project does not resemble any of them, say so explicitly in your brief — it usually means you need an adjacent skill instead.
- Design VPC, compute, and storage architecture for a specific workload
- Migrate applications from on-premise or another cloud into AWS
- Build serverless systems with Lambda, API Gateway, and DynamoDB
- Harden accounts: IAM least privilege, encryption, logging, guardrails
- Analyse and reduce spend with right-sizing, savings plans, and lifecycle rules
What it costs in 2026
Hourly ranges seen across global freelance marketplaces. Use them to sanity-check a quote rather than as a target — a well-specified project frequently costs less at a higher hourly rate than a vague one does at a lower rate.
Entry level
$40/hr
Building experience. Good value on well-defined, low-risk work with review.
Mid level
$75/hr
Can own a feature end to end and will tell you when your plan is wrong.
Specialist
$150/hr
Deep experience, architecture decisions, and work where mistakes are expensive.
Fixed-price quotes are usually the better structure for work you can describe precisely. Hourly is safer when the scope will genuinely change as you learn — but agree a cap in writing either way.
Tools and technologies to expect
You do not need to understand these. You do need to see them appear naturally in a candidate's answers rather than only in their profile keywords.
Before you hire: a short checklist
Most bad freelance outcomes are decided before any work starts. These four checks catch the majority of them.
- 1 Ask for an architecture diagram they produced and have them justify two choices.
- 2 Check IAM depth — over-permissive roles are the most common serious AWS finding.
- 3 Confirm everything will be in Terraform or CDK, not clicked into the console.
- 4 For cost work, ask for a specific saving they achieved and how it was measured.
Questions worth asking in the interview
You are not testing whether you can follow the answer. You are testing whether the answer is specific, whether it comes from experience, and whether they are comfortable saying "it depends" and explaining on what.
“What is the simplest architecture that meets this requirement?”
“How do you structure IAM for a small team with contractors?”
“How would you find what is driving our largest cost line?”
“What is your backup and recovery plan for this design?”
Warning signs
None of these are automatically disqualifying, but each one deserves a direct question before you commit money.
- Reaches for the most complex managed service available
- Root account used for daily work
- No cost estimate before building
Frequently asked questions
Why is our AWS bill so high?
Most commonly idle non-production environments, oversized databases, unattached storage, and cross-AZ data transfer. A one-week audit routinely finds 20–40% with no architectural change.
AWS, GCP, or Azure?
For most workloads the technical difference is not decisive. Choose by existing commitments, available credits, and who you can hire — those decide outcomes more than the service catalogue.
Serverless or servers?
Serverless for spiky, event-driven workloads and small teams. Long-running or steady high-throughput workloads are usually cheaper and more predictable on containers.
