Before you hire: a short checklist
Most bad freelance outcomes are decided before any work starts. These four checks catch the majority of them.
- 1 Ask whether you actually need Kubernetes. An honest answer of "not yet" is a strong signal.
- 2 Check they have operated a cluster in production, not only created one.
- 3 Confirm GitOps or equivalent, so cluster state is reviewable in git.
- 4 Ask about their approach to resource requests and limits, where cost hides.

None of these are automatically disqualifying, but each one deserves a direct question before you commit money.

A properly configured managed cluster with CI/CD, monitoring, and documentation is commonly $6,000–20,000, and the documentation is the part that determines whether it survives.
Can one freelancer run our cluster ongoing?
For setup and periodic maintenance, yes. For 24/7 production responsibility, a single freelancer is a single point of failure — use managed services or a team.
