Hire a Freelance Web Designer

Web designers work on sites that have to sell something: landing pages, marketing sites, portfolios, and shops. Success is measured in enquiries and orders, which makes this one of the easier design hires to evaluate honestly.

What a freelance Web Designer actually does

These are the engagements that come up most often. If your project does not resemble any of them, say so explicitly in your brief — it usually means you need an adjacent skill instead.

  • Design marketing sites and landing pages built around a conversion goal
  • Redesign dated sites without losing existing search traffic
  • Create page layouts for mobile first, then scale up
  • Build sites directly in Webflow, Framer, or WordPress page builders
  • Design and specify the assets a developer will need

What it costs in 2026

Hourly ranges seen across global freelance marketplaces. Use them to sanity-check a quote rather than as a target — a well-specified project frequently costs less at a higher hourly rate than a vague one does at a lower rate.

Entry level

$15/hr

Building experience. Good value on well-defined, low-risk work with review.

Mid level

$40/hr

Can own a feature end to end and will tell you when your plan is wrong.

Specialist

$90/hr

Deep experience, architecture decisions, and work where mistakes are expensive.

Fixed-price quotes are usually the better structure for work you can describe precisely. Hourly is safer when the scope will genuinely change as you learn — but agree a cap in writing either way.

Tools and technologies to expect

You do not need to understand these. You do need to see them appear naturally in a candidate's answers rather than only in their profile keywords.

Before you hire: a short checklist

Most bad freelance outcomes are decided before any work starts. These four checks catch the majority of them.

  1. 1 Ask for live URLs and check them on a phone before anything else.
  2. 2 Ask whether their sites produced measurable results, and how they know.
  3. 3 Clarify whether they hand over designs or build the site — this is the main misunderstanding.
  4. 4 For a redesign, confirm they will preserve URLs and metadata.

Questions worth asking in the interview

You are not testing whether you can follow the answer. You are testing whether the answer is specific, whether it comes from experience, and whether they are comfortable saying "it depends" and explaining on what.

“How do you decide what belongs above the fold?”

“How would you redesign this without losing our current search traffic?”

“How do you design for mobile when most of our content is dense?”

“What do you need from us before you can start?”

Warning signs

None of these are automatically disqualifying, but each one deserves a direct question before you commit money.

  • Only desktop mockups
  • Cannot name the goal of a page they designed
  • No live sites, only images

Frequently asked questions

How much does a website design cost?

A single landing page is typically $300–1,500. A multi-page marketing site with a design system is $2,000–10,000, depending on how much of the content and imagery already exists.

Design only or design and build?

Design-and-build in Webflow or WordPress is usually cheaper and faster for marketing sites. Design-only makes sense when a development team will implement it into an existing codebase.

Will a redesign hurt my rankings?

It can, badly, if URLs change without redirects or content is cut. Make the redirect map and content parity an explicit deliverable rather than assuming it is included.
